On surface:

Discussing the notion of 'surface' - PT 1

Summary

In response to the current exhibition 'Further' by artists Robbie Rowlands, Asma and Sabina Andron join Robbie to dig deep into the notion of 'surface'.

Episode Notes

Asma, an artist from Wilyakali and Barkindji land - Broken Hill delivers a unique perspective on the unseen in the context of ‘surface’. As a printmaker, her practice negotiates the complexities and wonder of her direct environment - a mix of fringe desert and brutal mining industries and her interest in the unseen, untapped energies that surround us.

Sabina draws out, not only the politics of surface but the dimensionality of these membranes. Sabina Andron is a researcher at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Cities. She works on urban visual culture and her book on urban surfaces comes out in 2023. She posts "one wall a day" on her website https://www.citysurfaces.com/.

Robbie Rowlands, a Naarm/Melbourne based artist helps frame the conversation with his new exhibition. The work ‘Further’ utilises recovered formply panels, previously used in the construction of concrete structures. Assembled and scored with a series of cut tapered lines, the work brings new focus to his site-based interventions. Treated as one, the Assembly Point vitrines form a horizon with distinct vanishing points. Rowlands’ intention is to lead you to consider not just what is within these spaces but what exists beyond.

Further is on show till July 8th 2023 at Assembly Point, Southbank, Naarm, Melbourne
